An uptown lunch staple

Little Village Grill has been feeding uptown Charlotte for about 20 years. For a stretch there were two locations, one in Gateway Village on West Trade Street and this one on East 4th Street. The Gateway spot has since closed, so 901 E. 4th St., a short walk from the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, is the place to go now.

The dining room is bright and full of plants, with tall windows, booths and a few patio tables out front. At lunch the line often reaches the door, but it moves quickly; staff sometimes walk the line taking orders so the grill can get started.

It's a family-run counter, and regulars say they're greeted by name. Plenty of first visits start with a jury duty summons, and plenty of those people come back.

What to order

Half the menu is Greek and half is American grill, and regulars swear by both. One tip from a reviewer: put fries on your gyro and tzatziki on your fries.

Pork gyro
A regular favorite: tzatziki, tomato and onion in a warm pita.
Lamb and beef gyro
Stacked high. Reviewers keep mentioning the homemade tzatziki.
Greek fries
Fries tossed with feta, olive oil, lemon juice and oregano.
Greek salad with chicken
Feta, Kalamata olives, pepperoncini and Greek dressing, with grilled chicken or gyro meat on top.
Double cheeseburger
Lettuce, tomato and mayo by default. Regulars add grilled onions.
Baklava and brownies
The brownies get almost as many mentions as the gyros.
